Wednesday 6th July, 9.45am ? 4pm, Congress House, Great Russell St, London WC1B 3LS. (Not in Oxford, but within reach for those interested enough.) The highlight of the 2011 TUC climate change conference is a high level panel debate on the topical question: What makes a good green government? Our panellists include Environment Secretary Chris Huhne; Shadow Environment Secretary Meg Hillier; and Green Party spokesperson Caroline Lucas MP. The panel will be chaired by Frances O'Grady, Deputy General Secretary, TUC. Panellists will make a few brief opening remarks, followed by a debate between the panellists and delegates, with Q&A from the floor. The debate will set the scene for a day of discussions on green jobs and growth, including industry roundtables arranged for later in the day. Coalition plans for the Green economy roadmap (due late June 2011), energy market reform, a low carbon skills strategy and the Green Investment Bank should be published by then. Other highlights of the day include three Policy roundtables: Building Visions for a Green economy. And (for the afternoon) four Policy Challenge roundtables: Where do we want to be, and how to get there? MAKING SENSE OF MEDIA REPORTING ON CLIMATE CHANGE. Thursday 14th July, 3-4pm, at the Old Indian Institute, 34 Broad Street (corner of Holywell and Catte Streets), Oxford, OX1 3BD. Mass media serve vital roles in communication processes between science, policy and the public, and often stitch together perceptions, intentions, considerations, and actions regarding climate change. Many dynamic, contested and complex factors contribute to how media outlets portray various facets of climate change. This talk will touch on salient and swirling contextual factors as well as competing journalistic pressures and norms that contribute to how issues, events and information have often become climate ?news?. Given by Dr Maxwell T. Boykoff, a former James Martin Fellow. For more details and registration for this free event, see http://www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/event/1016/ (Note: 14th July is a re-arranged date and earlier publicity may have carried a different date.) *********************************************************** 3.
