Talking Climate is a new initiative to provide a gateway to research on climate change communication. There is a great deal of research on climate change communication. But too often this valuable knowledge doesn?t reach the people who need it most: climate change communicators. At the same time, researchers are often unaware of how to promote their work beyond academic journals. At Talking Climate, the latest research evidence is translated into practical guides on a wide range of topics, ensuring academics and practitioners get the most from climate change communication research. With a comprehensive and regularly updated database of academic papers, a bi-weekly newsletter, and a blog featuring comment and analysis from climate change communication experts. Talking Climate is a partnership between the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN), the Public Interest Research Centre (PIRC) and Nottingham University School of Sociology and Social Policy. Visit the website, read the blog, sign up to the newsletter and start talking climate! www.talkingclimate.org Adam Corner, George Marshall & Richard Hawkins (Talking Climate) *********************************************************** 1. SEEING THE PERSON IN THE PROBLEM: a practitioner perspective on justice, the environment and displacement. Oxford Department of International Development, 3 Mansfield Road, Oxford, Wednesday 8th February, 5.00-6.30pm. Given by COIN?s Refugee Project Manager Hannah Smith, this lecture will present a practitioners' perspective on the policy options and challenges of responding to the displacement of people linked to environmental change. It argues that we can only respond appropriately if we recognise the person in the problem. Whilst the risk of displacement and forced migration in this context is real there is a huge amount that can be done to lessen the likelihood of it occurring. In order to secure justice for those affected migration and adaptive capacities need to be strengthened and people empowered in the process before humanitarian crises unfold. Whilst we must not assume we have all the answers we should not be complacent that the complexities will dissolve with time. *********************************************************** 4. GEORGE MARSHALL AT TENT CITY UNIVERSITY. George Marshall, COIN?s Projects Director, who has a wealth of experience in outreach for grassroots groups, will be attending to provoke and challenge thoughts and ideas on this.
